Kızılırmak Delta Wetland and Bird Sanctuary
We breathe in the Kızılırmak Delta Wetland where is one of the most important wetlands in Turkey and is located in the northern part of the country, where the Kızılırmak River flows into the Black Sea. It is situated near the city of Samsun, between the districts of Bafra and Ladik (UNESCO Tentative List).
The delta covers an area of approximately 37,000 hectares and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. It is an important breeding ground for many bird species, including pelicans, herons, and cormorants, and is considered a globally important bird area.
The Kızılırmak Delta is also an important habitat for fish, amphibians, and reptiles, with several species that are endemic to the region. The delta’s wetlands and marshes provide a vital ecosystem service by filtering pollutants from the river and helping to regulate water flow, thereby reducing the risk of flooding in the surrounding area.
The delta is a popular destination for birdwatching and ecotourism, with several observation points and walking trails available for visitors. In addition, traditional fishing methods are still practiced by local fishermen, who use small boats to catch fish and shrimp in the delta’s shallow waters.
